KMS semi final report:
A tough one to take for St Nicholas GFC this evening in Páirc Bhoilfe Toin, as we fell just short in a thrilling, high-scoring semi-final against Wolfe Tones.
It was very much a game of two halves. The Tones started brightly with an early goal, but a superb two-pointer from Sam Reilly kept us in touch. Scores from Con and Hayden helped settle the Nicks, but a costly lapse in discipline allowed the Tones to turn a promising attack for us into a quick free and a well-taken goal at the other end. Despite points from Paudi, the Tones finished the half strongly to lead 3-05 to 0-06.
The second half saw the Tones push further ahead, opening up an 11-point lead. The introduction of fresh legs proved crucial, with Sean Hoey, Ross Brady, Leo Quinn and Ruairi Hanlon all making a big impact and helping swing momentum back our way. A brilliant goal from Fionn Meagher sparked the comeback, followed by two points from Fionn and two excellent two-point frees from Hayden. A superbly worked team goal, finished by Jamie O’Brien after great play from Ross and Leo, brought us level and right back into contention.
With momentum on our side, it looked like we might push on, but credit to the Tones who regained control late on and edged ahead to win by the narrowest of margins, 3-13 to 2-15.
Best of luck to Wolfe Tones in the final. Attention now turns to the league as we face Westerns in the opening round.
